~Genesis 6:8~
is for NOAH
The
World Book says this about Noah:
Noah, pronounced NOH uh, according
to the Bible, was the only righteous, God-fearing man of his
time. Genesis 6-9 tells that he was chosen by God to keep some
people and animals alive during the Deluge, or great Flood. Noah
warned people for 120 years that the Flood was coming. During
that time, he built a ship, called the ark, which was 450 feet
(137 meters) long. He took into the ark his family, and enough
birds and animals to repopulate the earth. The rain poured for 40
days and 40 nights (Gen. 7:12, 24).
The waters dropped enough 150 days
after the Flood started that the ark was able to rest on the
mountains of Ararat. Noah let loose a raven that did not return.
Then he sent out a dove, and it returned because it could find no
place to perch. He sent out the dove two more times. On the
second flight, it returned with an olive branch in its mouth.
Noah and the animals left the ark later to begin a new life. Noah
offered sacrifice to God for deliverance, and God promised him
that He would never send another flood to destroy the earth. He
made the rainbow a sign of that promise. He commanded Noah and
his descendants to respect human life and to punish murder with
the death penalty.
Noah's sons were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Shem became father of
the Semitic peoples, including the Jews and the Arabs. Ham was
the father of the Hamitic peoples. Japheth was father of peoples
of Asia Minor and Europe. In traditions originally unrelated to
the Flood, Noah is pictured as a gardener, and credited with the
discovery of wine (Gen. 9:18-27).
This
is what the World Book says about the "Ark"
Ark usually refers to the vessel
that sheltered Noah and his family during the Deluge
(great flood) described in the Bible (Gen. 6). Ark comes from the
Latin word arca,
meaning chest, box, or coffer. In the United States, ark referred
to a large flatboat
used on western rivers during the expansion of the country.
This
is what the World Book says about the "Deluge"
Deluge, pronounced DEHL yooj,
according to the Bible, was a great flood that covered the
earth thousands of years ago. The Deluge destroyed all living
things except those that
God permitted to go aboard a huge ark that was built by Noah.
The Deluge is described in two accounts combined in Genesis 6 to
8. In one version, God instructs Noah to save one male and one
female of every animal. In the other, God tells Noah to take
seven pairs of animals considered "clean" according to
ancient dietary laws and one pair of "unclean" animals.
Both accounts agree that God sent the flood to punish the
wickedness of humanity.
Stories about great floods occur in the religious tradition of
many peoples. A famous account is found in the Epic of Gilgamesh
from Mesopotamia. Many scholars believe the Mesopotamian and
Biblical accounts are related.
This
is what the World Book says about "Ararat"
Ararat, pronounced AR uh rat, was
the country where, according to the Bible, Noah's ark landed
after the Deluge. The Biblical story is told in Genesis 6-8.
Ararat was the area surrounding Lake Van in ancient Armenia, now
part of Turkey. Many people believe that Noah's ark came to rest
on Mount Massis, the tallest mountain in Ararat, known today as
Mount Ararat. However, the Aramaic and Syriac translations of the
story speak of the ark landing in the mountains of Kurdistan,
southeast of Lake Van.
The land of Ararat is also mentioned in II Kings 19: 37 and
Isaiah 37: 38. These passages tell that the sons of the Assyrian
king Sennacherib fled to Ararat after they killed their father.
This
is what the World Book says about "Mount Ararat"
Mount Ararat, pronounced AR uh rat,
is a mountain in eastern Turkey near Lake Van. According to
Biblical tradition, Noah's Ark landed there after the Great Flood
(Genesis 6-8). However, the earliest artifacts archaeologists
have discovered on Ararat date from early Christian times,
thousands of years after the Great Flood would have occurred. The
mountain, also called Agri Dagi, is the highest peak in Turkey.
Scholars believe that for Biblical writers, Ararat probably
symbolized the edge of the known world. The mountain rises 16,849
feet (5,137 meters).
Noah is mentioned in the Bible
46 times.
Now that you have learned more about
Noah the words about the "end times" that Jesus
spoke should have much more meaning: "But as the
days of Noe were, so shall also the
coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before
the flood they were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the
day that Noe entered into
the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all
away; so shall also the
coming of the Son of man be." Matthew 24:37-39
