History of National Nursing Week
In 1971, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) designated May 12 – Florence Nightingale’s birthday – as
International Nurses Day. In 1985, in recognition of the dedication and achievements of the nursing profession,
the Canadian minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. May 12 is also
recognized as Canada Health Day.

The name changed to National Nursing Week in 1993 to emphasize the profession’s accomplishments as a
discipline. The purpose of National Nursing Week is to increase awareness among the public, policy-makers
and governments of the many contributions nurses make to the well-being of Canadians.

In the US Nurses Week is May 6th - 12th, 2011
National Nurses Week 2011 Theme is: Nurses: Nurses Trusted to Care
American National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th,
Florence Nightingale's birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National
Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as
National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003,
National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within
National Nurses Week (May 6-12) each year.
